Looking for environmental activism? Passion and Persistence at the Sierra Club of BC.

When we go hiking or skiing in the Cypress Provincial park just 30 minutes from Vancouver , BC, we take it for granted that the landscape is beautiful, that it’s so close to Vancouver and yet in the 60-70s, there was a time when groups of investors and developers had their eyes on these mountains. The Sierra Club of BC stepped up and was instrumental for the creation of the Cypress Provincial Park.

In her book, Diane Pinch presents how the activist club tackled so many projects all over BC since its inception on November 28th 1969.

Born as a new branch of the US based Sierra Club, the BC branch quickly became its own entity and eventually a Sierra Club Canada was created.

A thorough presentation of the various actions covers campaigns in Northern and Southern BC, the various conflicts with the forest and mining industries, Oil and Gas issues with the different pipelines past and future projects, the work done to protect the Oceans and Sea life, the Great Bear Rainforest to finish with what the future holds and the continued need for Passion and Persistence.

The book is available at the Vancouver Public library and I’m sure in plenty of other BC based libraries.

Reading the book, attending live fund raising events and obviously browse the Sierra Club of BC’s web site are steps that can be done to educate ourselves before choosing to be involved.

There’s a wide array of ways to be involved, if you’re not sure, one simple thing consists in making a donation.
